Before discussing the ingredients and science that make LEBON ESSENTIELS unique, it's worthwhile to highlight an often-overlooked element in our oral ecosystem: the oral microbiota.

The oral microbiota consists of all the microorganisms present in the mouth, amounting to several million bacteria, in fact. Most of the time, this internal bacteria live in harmony with the rest of the body. However, in the event of a disturbance to the oral microbiota, previously non-pathogenic bacteria can cause cavities, gingivitis, or periodontitis.

Maintaining the balance of the oral microbiota is a primary concern for LEBON.

Two types of bacteria play a fundamental role in upsetting the balance of the oral microbiota, namely Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus. That’s a mouthful! Through a process called fermentation, these two bacteria convert sugar into acids.

After consuming meals, snacks, or drinks other than water, an abundance of sugars arrives in the mouth, which calls these two bacteria into action. They perform their job all too well, rendering the oral environment more acidic, weakening tooth enamel, and building up plaque that leads to cavities.

Ensuring a balanced microbiota is essential for maintaining a healthy mouth and body.

 

INGREDIENTS AND THEIR PROPERTIES

 

Natural ingredients are used that work in synergy to achieve perfect oral hygiene in three ways: guarding tooth enamel, protecting the health of gums, and optimising the whiteness of teeth.

 

ENAMEL PROTECTION

Three natural ingredients are fundamental, dare it be said essential, to guaranteeing the protection of tooth enamel and guarding against plaque and tooth decay.

• GREEN TEA / Camellia sinensis – Certified organic.  

Green tea is one of the plants that naturally contains high levels of fluoride. The green tea we use is certified organic to ensure that the plant draws its fluoride from quality soil. The amount of fluoride in our toothpastes is dosed in a balanced and sufficient quantity to neutralise the action of the two bacteria (Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus) responsible for the transformation of sugars into acids in the mouth. This helps to avoid the acidification of the oral environment and makes green tea a natural warrior in preventing the weakening of tooth enamel and the formation of plaque and cavities.

• HYDROXYAPATITE, a natural mineral ingredient composed of calcium and phosphate, is present in the composition of teeth, constituting 97% of enamel and 70% of dentin. This ingredient has a re-mineralising action: it fills micro-cracks and pores in dental enamel. Through this regenerative action, hydroxyapatite helps reduce tooth sensitivity and protect enamel while keeping teeth white.

• XYLITOL – Birch Bark Extract (Natural Vegetable Sweetener)

Xylitol, a natural vegetable sweetener, is not sufficient on its own to neutralise the fermentation process; however, as a sidekick to green tea, it strongly inhibits acidification to prevent the formation of plaque and cavities. Additionally, xylitol plays a supporting role in re-mineralising teeth by helping to bind hydroxyapatite to the enamel.

 

GUM PROTECTION

• ORGANIC ALOE VERA / Aloe Barbadensis – Certified organic.

Aloe vera is a plant with multiple beneficial properties for the skin, mucous membranes, and gums. It promotes tissue healing of ulcerations and mouth ulcers and is a natural ally in reducing inflammation and sensitivity of the gums.

• PAPAYA / Carica Papaya – Certified organic.

The natural extracts of papaya contain an enzyme called papain. Papain naturally fights discolouration by gradually dissolving stains, tartar, and dental plaque. By doing so, papaya extracts contribute to revealing the natural whiteness of your teeth.

• CHARCOAL – additional whitening effect. Vegetable Charcoal / From Oak and Charm Trees. Despite its dark colour, charcoal has been recognised for generations for its whitening properties, making it a powerful agent in preventing tartar and staining. At LEBON, we utilise an ultra-fine grade of carbon that does not risk weakening the teeth. Its effective abrasive quality is balanced by the naturally re-mineralising hydroxyapatite. Additionally, charcoal works in tandem with papaya to naturally enhance the whiteness of your smile.

 

A MATTER OF MINT

 

LEBON ESSENTIELS comprises four different 80 ml toothpastes that utilise various types of mint. The effects of these perennial plants range from mild to intense, providing you with that invigorating feeling of freshness.

 

SWEET MINT

Sweet Mint contains Green Mint, also known as Mentha Viridis or Mentha Spicata (Spearmint). It offers a sweet aroma that produces a soothing, subtle sensation, reminiscent of traditional Moroccan mint tea.  

One might describe Sweet Mint as tea time in a tube.

 

CLASSIC MINT

Classic Mint and Classic Mint + Charcoal contain Peppermint, also known as Mentha piperita. Peppermint provides a refreshing aroma for a well-balanced sensation.
